Quick review of Opera 10.50 beta for Mac

by curious on Feb.28, 2010, under Technology

Found here: http://www.opera.com/browser/next/

Pros:

  • The password save bar (seen above) offers an option to save across site or just the specific page.
  • Full screen support!!! (I wish firefox and/or chrome would get this.)
  • Feels fast (not noticeably faster then chrome though)
  • Tab mouse-over thumbnails seem nift

Cons:

  • No ability to reopen closed tab (firefox/chrome support this)
  • Google Wave doesn’t work well – the scrollbar doesn’t work (firefox/chrome work fine)
  • Opera doesn’t support greasemonkey scripts
  • Extension support seems to be limited to widgets and basic user.js support

Todo:

  • Test widgets
  • Test Opera Unite

NBC shows now available on Amazon Unbox

by curious on Sep.05, 2007, under News/Reviews/Etc, Technology

Unbox resells shows/movies in a digital DRM format that can only be viewed in Windows and in some cases Tivo… the lack of OSX as a supported platform means I still need to usenet/p2p for shows I miss… but I never knew that you could buy shows on demand from your tivo before. I’ve been aware of tivo coming out with new units and people complaining about prices, but I stopped following along when I joined the digital satalite world since the digital satellite DVRs are “good enough”… perhaps I need to see what Tivo has been up to lately…

gotta love it when your plan backfires….

www.osx86project.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=120&Itemid=2

So, apple apparently didn’t like some of the links on the osx86project website… so osx86project took thier site down for awhile to remove these links… well, they also stated that Maxxuss’s site was a surce of problems in thier latest news… good to let people know exactly whats going on, even if that means giving out a fairly unique “tag” to likely abusers ;)

NOTE:I have refrained from directly linking to the Maxxuss site to help Apple cover up Maxxuss’s naughty patches… without a direct link I’m sure know one would beable to find Maxxuss’s site.

unsanity’s review of “macbook” seems to be a bit off…

by curious on Jan.13, 2006, under Technology

RE: www.unsanity.org/archives/000445.php (comparing the powerbook 15″ with new 15″)

Power: they state that the new laptops will require more power then the G4s, is probably the case. however none of the figures they give indicate this… The extra 10-watt-hour battery just be used to provide extra battery life. The 85 watt AC adapters could be designed to used with a wide range of products – including workstations that demand even more power… they are after all introducing a new power connector.

Parts “missing”:
PCMCIA: I have used and owned many laptops in my life time – ever since the age of USB (and more recently USB2): Legacy PCMCIA is pretty much dead – except for crypto cards and some kookie wireless services – which will find replacements in the Express Card world soon… PCMCIA is done for…
S-Video: The only used the s-video port on my current laptop as an “ohh neat” moment when tried it out… for presentations I use the VGA out. The laptop comes with DVI which I’ll proly start using more often… it comes with a vga adapter so I can still plug in my old monitors – AND if I ever find a need to plug my laptop into an S-Video device, well, I’ll just get my self an expensive $20 adapter… (as for playing dvd from my powerbook to my tv, my tv has a DVI in pthhh)
FW800: Have no plans to use this in at least the next two years, at which point I belive there will be an FW800 “killer” that will end up being a better choice anyways. As for the loss of the extra FW400… ohh gee you can’t import from more then one digital video camera at once (except for the isight)… additionaly I don’t think this was a power decision, I’m guessing this was a space conservation choice… look at what they ended up doing with the USB ports

Visually Unimpressive:
Yes, we loose 86,400 pixels, however the loss of 60pixels does not nessarily mean a loss of DPI since the screen itself is narrower (see isight up top)… and note the 1440×900 resolution is the resolution of the previous gen 15 and 17″ powerbooks… I’m quite sure that visualy this laptop will be impressive.

Burning Issues:
Don’t really know much about the DL feature – it seems to me there is some feature that Powermacs came with that was unadvertised… the “macbooks” don’t claim to have this feature so they must not have this feature?!?

Arbitrary Additions:
These add ons may be crap, then again I thought apple was stupid for getting into the MP3 business :)

Performance:
Right now it’s all a bunch of BS… I belive this laptop will be faster then the G4 powerbooks, I don’t think people are going to see a 4-5X increase in speed though… Keep in mind the G4 is dated technology… The first G4 macs came out in 1999, the first G4 powerbooks came out in 2001… for the last ~5 years it’s all been speed bumps… these latest notebooks are using THE latest technology from Intel, even if intel finds itself behind IBM and AMD, it is certainly NOT 5 years behind… I do long to see some real numbers – ok Really I just want to get my hands on my new computer ;)

This is a major “Rev 1″ product, buying this s high risk – hell Apple hasn’t even publish battery life specs on this thing, for all I know this thing could suck down a better in a half an hour, run slower then my 200mhz laptop, and crash every 30 seconds… I don’t know… Unless you have specific reasons for buying this laptop, I recommend waiting, something better will be along sooner then you know… the intel replacemnt for the ibook I belive will be an amazing product and have an extremly nice price/performace price…

Ohh and to counter his comments on Apple’s use of EFI – it’s about time someone took some action to kill the BIOS… the Legacy BIOS was(is) crap… I’m buying this to run OSX and if OSX fails me, to run Linux and/or openbsd… I have no doubts that someone will develop a way to run some form of windows (pre vista) on this box… they did with the XBOX, I’m sure they will do it here too.

ordered new Apple Intel Powerbook(I don’t care what they call it)

by curious on Jan.12, 2006, under Technology

-Yes I know I have to wait for Feb to get the thing
-Yes I know I’m paying an apple premium
-Yes I know I’m paying new to market premium
-Yes I know I could get more features for less going with Gateway/Dell

news.com.com/2061-10792_3-6026458.html?part=rss&tag=6026458&subj=news

But I’m tired of owning crappy laptops for my person workstation… I’m ready to give OSX another try (the features in the newer versions of osx fit my personality well)… ohh yea.. and the powerbooks FEEL nice… no more filmsy HP plastic crap!

Gahh! can’t find drivers for an old usb thumb drive

by curious on Jan.03, 2006, under Technology

A 16MB thumb drive that recently surfaced in my garage… this device does not use the standard USB storage drivers.. on the back of the device it tells me to d/l drivers from www.usbmedia.com which is a domain that is up for sale… with a little googlin’ I discover that this was made by Agaté Technologies… (their domain, AgateTech.com, is also up for sale)…. digging through archive.org I find a page that has the driver web.archive.org/web/20040203021348/http://agatetech.com/support.html AND when I d/l the driver it actually seems to download… when I look at the file it LOOKS like a self extracting winzip archive but it won’t extract and winzip won’t read it…

This “Q drive” is pissing me off… I don’t remeber what, if anything is on this drive, and I want to know!!!!

If anyone knows where I can find drivers for OSX/WinXP/Linux for this thing… let me know! K?

Thanks!

Update:found a site that has drivers: www.crazypc.com/support/support.htm

see comments for another possible site…
