MTV Censors videos online!
by curious on Oct.30, 2008, under Images, Media, Politics, Video
When I found out that MTV put up a massive collection of music videos online, I was curious to see if they would edit the videos and if so, how. Well, I decided to pick the most challenging video to censor, which is Bjork’s Pagan Poetry… the video shows nipples displays sex in a uniquely distorted. This video played uncensored on MTV2. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pagan_Poetry. The first scene to get censored was a cut to her face… with a large black square :
MTV:
UnCensored:
Why the face? Maybe because she looks like she is enjoying herself “too” much? I don’t know…
Btw here is a screenshot of the distorted sex scene.. if it wasn’t for wikipedia, I never would have known for certian what was being shown during these scene: (note: these scenes are not censored at all on MTV’s site)
MTV censored the nipple, ear, and back piercing as well… I can understand the nipple, but ear and back?
come on…
MTV:
UnCensored:
Other quick findings…
Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls” has the word “suicidal” completely removed from the song
they don’t have:
Rape Me
Smack My Bitch Up
So, just like I never buy music from Walmart, I won’t be getting my music videos from MTVmusic.com

UPDATE:
The censorship may also tied to brand names… MTV bleeped “Burger King” from the line “I once got busy in a Burger King bathroom”

Ohhh! and “girls’ pants” from the line “I’m still gettin’ in the girls’ pants” – censored as well…
Amazing Grace/Alleluia revisited AGAIN
by curious on Oct.12, 2008, under Faith, Media
In high school I was involved with a Christian youth group called “Young Life”. Most of the time at the meetings was spent singing songs, and I fell in love with the arrangement and how they segragated the singing roles to Amazing Grace – years latter I was on a quest to find a reasonable recording… and found it:
Years later that linked stopped working and quest was on again, and I found the recording from the song writter:
While looking for new Amazing Grace covers, I found ANOTHER person who has recorded it and added a verse:
Don’t know if Paul Coleman got the rights to Tony Congi’s song writting or not… but it was intresting to find another person record it using a new name.
MuxTape is goneish… Say hello to favtape
by curious on Sep.26, 2008, under Media
Muxtape no longer hosts mix tapes so my muxtape is no longer available… so I’ve replicated the old tape as close as I could within the limits of favtape.com site. Have not been able to find Sinead O’Connor’s War (Live) on fav tape yet… also some of tracks are from unedited live coverage and not nessarily as good as tracks I had found for muxtape.
The “new” mix tape can be found at:
favtape.com/curious/Girls+cover+the+boys
Here are the details regarding the mix tape:
If you haven’t caught on all ready, I have a very diverse collection of music and musical interests. So, I had start off with a theme/challange… the “Rules” with this mix:
-Must be a cover
-The cover must be performed by a female
-The song must either be commonly associated with a male singer or written by a male writer.
-The cover must be unique, ie. the song should feel different from the original
-The covers must be unique in style from each other (ie. not all punk or country)
-Covers should not already be popular
1. Chromatics – I’m on Fire:
I discovered this one on muxtape. There are a lot of cover theme muxtapes that have this on their tapes, and for good reason
. Originally written and performed by Bruce Springsteen
2. T.A.T.U – How Soon Is Now:
The Russian duo put their unique voices this 80s classic. Written by Morrisey and John Marr. Originally performed by The Smiths
3. Scissor Sisters – Comfortably Numb:
Listen to this cover with an open mind. Sissor Sisters give this song a COMPLETELY different feel. If you let it move you, you will like it! Written by Roger Waters and David Gilmour Originally performed by Pink Floyd.
4. Sinead O’Connor – War (Live): [NOTE: this isn't on the "New" mix tape yet]
This is Sinead singing War at the Bob Dylan tribute concert where the a large number of the audience members tried to boo her off the state because she had ripped a picture of the pope on Saturday Night Live just days before. You can feel the emotion behind her singing this song, and the audience booing/cheering in the background. This doesn’t seem to fit well on this muxtape, so I may take it out. Written by Alan Cole. Originally performed by Bob Marley
5. Tori Amos – Amazing Grace:
Tori put her own spin on this Christian staple. Originally written by John Newton.
6. Kate Bush – Rocket Man
This cover may have made it onto the charts at one point, so I’m not sure if this violates one of my rules or not
. Composed by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Originally performed by Elton John
7. Cowboy Junkies – Sweet Jane
Blah blah blah, just check it out
. Written by Lou Reed. Originally performed by Velvet Underground.
8. Blue Man Group – Baba O’Riley
If you every have a chance to see Blue Man Group’s MegaStar tour, see it… this is defiantly something wonderful to experience in person… (look for youtube videos of this to get an idea of what goes on during the performance). Written by Pete Townshend. Originally performed by The Who.

by curious on Aug.05, 2008, under Media

LiveLeak takes down video due to death threats!
by curious on Mar.30, 2008, under Faith, Media, Video
So, the video site that shows videos that almost no one else is willing to show has taken down a video due to death threats… The video is a series of clips relating to violence done “in the name of Allah” interspersed with quotes for the Koran. Wired did a news story on it if your interested in the details. Google still has the video on google video. Are the quotes from the Koran taken out of context or poorly translated?
